Do not use too much dishwasher detergent. More is not better when it comes to dishwasher detergent. Fill the first cup all the way full. (this is the cup without a cover that drops into the dishwasher as soon as you close the door) The second cup is not necessary but if you want to put detergent in that one also, only fill it half way. If you use tablets or pouches, do not put them in the soap cup. It works much better if you just lay the tablet or pouch on the bottom of the dishwasher under the lower rack. This gives the dishwasher more time to rinse out all the soap before the end of the cycle. I highly recommend using tablets or pouches.

I am living in a small apartment and the kitchen space is not big at all. However, I have consider buying a simple dish drainer for a long time, but I did not quite like the standard one as it will sit on my counter-top and it is not good look as well.
